week 06 - arduino + physical distortion

Simple test to see if I could get the Arduino working. Wasn't sure how to connect both the motor shield and the ethernet shield at the same time as they can't fit together. Do i have to use two Arduino's to be able to control the motor via ethernet?

Physical distortion

For simplicity I just animated a continuous, looping motion. If this was user controlled i think i would rather make it so you draw a pattern that actives the corresponding motors which will then go in a continuous motion. Alternatively you can rotate each motor similar to the example above where the motor is controlled via. phone and draw a pattern with the motors.

Distortion with strings could be explored many ways. E.g. that a motor wires them up, so 'distorted' when loose etc. But not really sure if it will be a better result than just doing it digitally.

Maybe interface could look like this? Each circle corresponds to a step motor.

'Distortion' with marker. Not sure how this would actually work in practice as it would draw on the same paper repeatedly.

Openframeworks

Pretty heavy on coding. I basically can’t do anything here without looking up guides / documentation as is with programming usually. But seems to have nice add ons. Also the default example projects are nice. I feel like with this i need to have a pretty clear idea of what i want to do before starting as i would have to a lot of research into which add-ons / how to use the classes.

Touchdesigner

This one feels much easier, but still feel like I need to watch some guides just to learn how you can put things together. What felt intuitive to me didn't really work. Tried to recreate the same project as the one from Openframeworks to see what was more intuitive, but couldn't do it.

Has really nice example projects. But same problem as touchdesigner. Need to learn how you can string components together.

Messed around with this for a while. This is such a difficult program.

Week 03 - The modern mashup

The initial concept for this video was to merge together media from three different sources. One for the actual visuals, one for the deepfake and one for sound. So the idea was to deepfake R Kelly into the Heaven's Gate initiation video, lip synced to his live performance in Ethiopia where he essentially does the same thing as the Heaven's Gate tape. So to create a comparison of R Kelly to a cult leader. However, as I discovered, deep fakes takes a lot of time to create. Even with 60 000 thousand iterations with the model trainer, the results are nowhere close to good enough for someone to be able to spot that it's R Kelly.

As the deep fake results where not really that good i decided to switch up the concept. It is a now a combination of the original three sources mixed up together with the "How to start a cult" audio and the Pastor pushing people with the power of the holy ghost. To sum up, the concept of the video is kind of messy. At the moment it is two loosely developed concepts instead of one well developed.
